Material Options:
We stock fret wire in three primary alloys, each offering different wear resistance and tonal characteristics:
Nickel-Silver: The traditional industry standard. Offers a classic feel and is easy to level and crown. Available in various hardness levels (e.g., 18% nickel content).
Stainless Steel: The ultimate in durability. Virtually immune to wear, providing a permanently smooth, glass-like surface for effortless bending.
Phosphor-Bronze: A striking gold-colored alloy that sits between nickel-silver and stainless steel in terms of hardness. It is hypoallergenic and offers a unique aesthetic for custom builds.
Sizing and Profiles:
Selecting the correct fret size is essential for the player’s comfort and the guitar’s setup:
Width and Height: We offer profiles ranging from Narrow/Tall (vintage style) to Jumbo and Super Jumbo for modern playing techniques. A taller fret allows for easier bends and cleaner vibrato, while a lower fret provides a more traditional, "woody" feel.
Tang Dimensions: Pay close attention to the tang width to ensure a proper fit in your fretboard slots. For vintage instruments without an adjustable truss rod, using a slightly oversized tang can aid in compression fretting, helping to introduce a subtle back-bow to counteract string tension.
Format and Radius:
Pre-cut Sets: Arched to specific radii to match common fretboard curvatures, reducing the amount of preparation needed before installation.
Straight Rods: Ideal for luthiers who prefer to radiusing the wire themselves or need custom lengths for non-standard instruments.
Technical Note:
When upgrading to stainless steel, ensure your workshop is equipped with high-quality, hardened nippers and files, as this material is significantly tougher on tools than traditional nickel-silver wire.
