Luthiery is a craft and an art form in one. Every luthier needs and uses many different tools and materials specific for the task and the instrument they are building or repairing. Different tools are used for building, repairing, finishing, and setting up guitars. Although there are many power tools available most luthiers still use hand tools.
Building guitars starts from wood so many wood tools are required. There are saws of many kinds, rasps, files, planes, and scrapers used to shape the wood. Power tools are also very handy so you can find a drill press, router, or belt sander very helpful. There are also some tools required for frets installation and dressing, making nuts and saddles, cutting out pickguards, routing pickup, and hardware cavities. Binding and inlays installations will require some different tools also. Finishing is a very important and time-consuming step in guitar building. Therefore it is a good idea to make it correctly the first time. This step requires a lot of sanding, scraping, more sanding, and polishing. Therefore you would need many different sanding blocks, sanding papers, some scrapers may come in handy, and buffing tools and compounds. There are a number of ways you can finish your instrument. There are many lacquers, oils, waxes, and some other methods available. Every method requires different approaches and different tools. Many standard tools you may need include a good set of screwdrivers, Allen wrenches, sockets, hammer, some kind of guitar neck rest, a solid vice and a small one for the detailed job, and many more. There are also some nice multi-tools that can be a useful and good help when working in the field. Aside from the tools, every luthier uses a few different glue types, some lubricants, and several cleaning solutions. For sure there are some things we forgot to mention here as every man has his own workflow and skills.
