A guitar bridge is an essential part of the instrument. There are many types of guitar bridge that vary in function and design. A good guitar bridge will not only make your life easier but can also enhance your guitar looks.
In acoustic and classical guitars a bridge is made of rosewood or ebony but other wood species are also used. A bone or plastic saddle fitted on the bridge raises the strings to the correct height and transfers their vibrations to the guitar body. Electric guitar bridges are made out of metal parts. Different alloys are used for each part. Most cheap bridges use plain steel plate or zinc alloys. Best brands like Gotoh, TonePros, Schaller, Floyd Rose or Kahler use different materials such as stainless steel, brass, titanium, and zinc. Brass, steel, or titanium are known as the best materials for bridge saddles. For tremolo blocks, brass or steel is used but there are some other designs using titanium or even stone. There are few tremolo bridges designs. The standard, Fender-style tremolo bridge is a very common choice. It allows a player to use it extensively when it is set up correctly. Floyd Rose double-locking design ensures the best tunning stability and allows for some extreme tremolo effects. Therefore it is often used by many guitar virtuosos. Bigsby tremolo, as well as some other vintage designs, look awesome but they just can't provide that tunning stability. They are used for light sound alteration when you need to give that chord something a little extra. It is easier to use and maintain for sure. Single hardtail or tune-o-matic bridge will stay in tune unless you really do something with it. They also ensure most string to body contact that relates fuller tone and better sustain. In comparison, similar guitars with tremolos tend to sound weaker and brighter. String changing is also a lot easier in most cases with a standard hardtail or t-o-m bridge. Most tremolo bridges have wider string spacing that means the high e and low e strings are spread further apart. This can influence your playing style and technique. There are also wider pickups available for guitars equipped with tremolo bridges as standard pickups may have pole pieces spacing to narrow and this can cause some problems as well.Click for more
